Each player is dealt 6 cards (depending on the number of players). An additional card is placed on the discard pile. All other cards remain in the stock.
Starting with the player to the dealer’s left, and continuing clockwise, each player in turn must either play a legal card face up on top of the discard pile, or draw a card from the undealt stock. In order to be legal, the card must match the card on the discard pile either in rank (7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace) or suit (Clubs, Spades, Hearts, Diamonds). A Jack may be placed on all other cards and the player must nominate a suit, which must be played next.
If a player can’t place a legal card on the discard pile, they must draw a card from the stock. If they still don’t have a legal card, it’s the next player’s turn.
If there are no cards left in the stock, the discard pile is shuffled and used as the new stock.
The first player who gets rid of all cards wins the game. The card points left in the other player’s hands are the bonus points for winning. If a player has only one card left, they must warn the other players by saying “Mau”.
7 – the next player must draw 2 cards or counter with another 7. In this case, the next player must draw 4 cards, etc.
8 – the next player in rotation misses a turn, and the turn passes to the following player (unless the player counters with another 8)
9 – Change of direction
Jack – wish for another suit
